Just as organizations once wrestled with the rise of Shadow IT — unauthorized apps, systems, and solutions used outside official governance — we are now witnessing the surge of Shadow AI. And just like its predecessor, it is both a sign of unmet needs and a potential source of deep risk. This isn’t a hypothetical future. Shadow AI is already here. And if we don’t act with urgency, clarity, and nuance, it will become one of the defining challenges to trust in regulated industries.
The Inevitable Rise of Shadow AI
AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and countless others are delivering real, immediate value to individuals. Employees are using them to:
Draft documentation and reports
Translate and summarize dense regulatory texts
Generate code snippets
Brainstorm new ideas
Prepare meeting notes and SOPs
